The course seeks to develop a critical understanding of the principles and values of governance, with a focus on the architecture and mechanisms of governance in Africa. It will also attempt to probe into the interplay between these concepts and show their role and complementarity in the process of human development. Focus is on the essentials for understanding contemporary African governance, including the effects of colonialism, independence movements, authoritarian rule, the nature and powers of the African state, the continents recent movement towards democracy. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the processes for improving governance and democracy across a spectrum of issues within the African context. Participants will be exposed to the ideological context and processes of governance in Africa. This agenda is based on the premise that the development of the nations of Africa, depends upon good governance.
